Is Your Sonic Anemometer Lying?
Flow Distortion Errors in a Non-Orthogonal Sonic Anemometer
Investigators who have data collected from all their sites (Kochendorfer et al., 2012 and Frank et al., 2013) have found that data from stations using the non-orthogonal probes were underestimating both the vertical wind component and the heat flux by about 15% compared to those using ATI's orthogonal K-probes. This seems to match the discrepancy in the energy budget calculations from those sites, implying a possible connection.
Could the non-orthogonal configuration be responsible for underestimating the vertical wind? Earlier comparison tests revealed differences of this magnitude, but it was assumed the orthogonal probes were the ones reading too high. The exhaustive tests and analyses reported by these two groups of investigators make it clear that the non-orthogonal probes, for reasons unknown at the time, were indeed underestimating the vertical wind.
The orthogonal probes in the tests seemed to have no trouble sensing the wind to within 1% accuracy. We think the problem lies buried in the way the coordinate transformation works and it may be making the vertical wind component particularly prone to underestimation. That is the variable we most need to be accurate for its effect on the vertical flux estimates that go into the energy balance calculation.

TrisonicaTM Mini - Firmware Update
Firmware Release 1.74 Now Available
We just made a good thing even better!
As a result of wind tunnel testing we have been conducting, we found that we could improve on both the horizontal and vertical wind velocity measurement capabilities on the TriSonica Mini (TSM) Wind & Weather Sensor. Firmware Release 1.74 enhances the 3-dimensional shadow correction capabilities of the TSM. It is recommended that all TriSonica Mini users update the firmware on their units to Release 1.74. As a valued client, we are making this enhancement available to you at no cost. Our way of saying thank you for your continued business and support. Simply click here to go to our website and download the upgrade. A Windows-based GUI app will be provided to guide you through the upgrade process. Please note that devices with Firmware Release 1.5.2 need to contact Anemoment directly to obtain instructions on how to update their TSM to Firmware Release 1.74. |
We're Here To Help!
Are you having problems with your ATI Instruments?
Be it field operations, trying to make it work in your application, or just trying to make it work on the workbench.
We are here to help. The next step is up to you.
It’s quite easy, just click here... info16@apptech.com and send us some symptoms.
Do you have a special application that requires a wind velocity measurement, but the off-the-shelf sonic anemometers don’t physically fit your application? Call the ATI factory, we have no problem adapting and tailoring our sonic technology to your application. |
